How We Talk About Impact

Blue Thumb Project is committed to being clear and accurate about how our products support restoration efforts in the Chesapeake Bay.

This page explains how we define, calculate, and communicate impact.

Our Approach

We build our impact messaging around three principles:

Clarity
We aim to make it easy to understand what each purchase supports

Accuracy
We avoid exaggerated or misleading claims

Transparency
We communicate how contributions are used and how impact is estimated

What “Supports” Means

When we say a product “supports” restoration, we mean:

A portion of the purchase price is allocated toward funding restoration efforts carried out by partner organizations.

This may include:

  • Oyster restoration and reef building
  • Seagrass and habitat restoration
  • Water quality improvement initiatives

Purchases do not correspond to individually tracked or assigned oysters, plants, or specific restoration units.

How Impact Is Calculated

Impact figures (such as “resstores 500 oysters”) are based on:

  • Estimated costs of restoration activities
  • Funding allocations per product
  • Data provided by restoration partners and publicly available sources

These figures represent estimated potential impact, not guaranteed or exact outcomes.

Actual results may vary depending on:

  • Project type
  • Environmental conditions
  • Timing and scale of restoration work

Timing of Impact

Funds from purchases are allocated to restoration efforts on an ongoing basis.

This means:

  • Impact may not occur immediately at the time of purchase
  • Contributions may be pooled and distributed over time
  • Projects may take months or longer to complete

Partnerships

Blue Thumb Project supports organizations engaged in environmental restoration work.

We do not directly carry out restoration activities.

Our role is to:

  • Contribute funding
  • Support ongoing projects
  • Help expand restoration efforts over time

Specific partners and projects may be updated as the business grows.

No Guarantee of Specific Outcomes

While we aim to support meaningful environmental impact:

  • We do not guarantee specific environmental results
  • We do not control all aspects of restoration projects
  • Outcomes depend on external factors, including environmental conditions and project execution

Transparency Commitment

As Blue Thumb Project grows, we intend to provide updates that may include:

  • Total contributions made
  • Types of projects supported
  • General progress of restoration efforts

We are committed to improving transparency over time as systems develop.

Responsible Communication

We make every effort to ensure that:

  • Impact claims are not misleading
  • Language reflects estimated contributions
  • Messaging aligns with actual funding and project activity

If updates or changes are needed, we will revise our messaging accordingly.
